Safety tips for tourists in São Paulo
São Paulo is a lively, modern city filled with culture and excitement, but safety is an important consideration for travelers. As Brazil’s largest city and one of the largest in the world, São Paulo has its share of crime, especially in certain areas. However, it is generally safe for visitors if they remain aware, take basic precautions, and avoid neighborhoods known for high crime rates. Travelers should always secure their belongings, carrying them in a closed purse in front of their body or in a front pocket to prevent pickpocketing, especially in busy areas like downtown, Paulista Avenue, Vila Madalena and metro/train stations. It’s also best to avoid showing valuables like cell phones and cash, as this can attract thieves. While women can generally feel safe walking around, it’s important to exercise caution in less crowded areas. Traveling in groups is recommended, and in case of an emergency, the women’s police unit can be reached at 180.
